St. Louis CITY SC to celebrate environmental sustainability practices and new initiatives -- such as AI sorting technology and the utilization of renewable energy credits -- at upcoming “Sustainability Match” on April 19
In recognition of St. Louis CITY SC’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, the U.S. Green Building Council has awarded Energizer Park LEED Gold certification for Operations and Maintenance, a first for a St. Louis sporting venue and among the few MLS soccer-specific stadiums with the distinction. A globally recognized standard for a building’s commitment to environmentally sustainable practices, LEED Gold certification can be given to newly constructed or existing buildings. Energizer Park was recognized for its robust commitment to zero waste, efficient energy and water management systems, access to public transit and bike/pedestrian facilities, and indoor air quality.
The club is looking to celebrate the new designation and its many sustainability efforts leading up to Earth Day on Saturday, April 19 when the club plays the Vancouver Whitecaps.
“After launching our Goal: ZERO campaign to reach zero waste for our MLS matches last year, we challenged ourselves to embrace new ways to advance our sustainability practices and inspire our fan base and city,” said Diego Gigliani, St. Louis CITY SC President and GM. “We are proud our efforts are being recognized with LEED Gold certification. Sustainability is about more than doing what is good for our environment – it’s about doing what is resourceful, efficient, and innovative for the future of our community.”
At the club’s sustainability match, CITY SC also will combine its tech-forward fan experience with its commitment to sustainability with the introduction of Intuitive AI’s Oscar Sort stations at Energizer Park, which uses AI technology to gamify sorting to help increase efficiency and help motivate and educate fans on sustainable practices. Energizer Park will have eight Oscar Sort stations provided by soft drink partner PepsiCo. In addition, all Energizer Park MLS matches through 2025 will be powered by renewable energy through Green-e Certified Renewable Energy Credits.
In April 2024, CITY SC launched Goal: ZERO, an initiative aimed to reach zero waste status by diverting more than 90% of all waste produced at its MLS matches away from the landfill. CITY SC diverted an average of 90.3% of waste away from the landfill in 2024, including composting over 42 tons, and have reached zero waste status for all its home 2025 MLS matches.
As part of the Our CITY commitment to sustainability, CITY SC has implemented the following sustainable practices:
- Zero waste stadium operations on all MLS match days and expanded to all operations in 2025
- No single-use plastic bottles, cups and single-use bags at Energizer Park
